Check your tires.

The maintenance and upkeep of your car is extremely important from a safety, as well as economic viewpoint. Just one part malfunctioning can have severe consequences on the performance of your vehicle and on the costs involved in fixing the car. The following tips are meant to help you get the basics of maintaining your car in optimum condition.

A vehicle’s tires are one of the most important safety concerns involved in its upkeep. It is important that you properly inflate the tires according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Occasionally, check the pressure on the tires with a tire gauge. Replace your tires as soon as you are able to see the tread wear indicators between the threads. The pressure on your tires should be checked every few days and the wear at least once a week.

Oil is to a car what blood is to humans and animals. Without it, life would not be possible. If you don’t know how to check your oil properly, make sure you go get it checked often at the gas station or repair shop. It is recommended that your oil be changed every 3000 to 3500 miles. While some manufacturers of oil claim their oil is good for at least 10,000 miles, don’t take their word for it and replace your oil every 5,000 miles or so. You should be checking your oil at least once a week.

The importance of having clean windows and mirrors, as well as working lights cannot be understated here. Driving with cracked windows can be terribly dangerous. You should avoid driving too close to other cars on the road, so that loose objects or road debris do not damage your windshield. Cops are always looking for cars with lights that are not working, so to not get stopped and for your own safety, always replace non-working lights as soon as possible. Front lights and rear lights are very important in ensuring a safe driving experience.

At least once a month, you should take your car in and have the brakes checked by a mechanic. In order to maintain the maximum braking efficiency for your braking system, it is important to replace your brakes periodically. As soon as you hear your brakes squealing, do not hesitate, get them looked at immediately.

Another part of your car that makes noise when they need to be replaced is your belts. They should be checked for wear and tear. The tension of the belts is very important to maintain in order to keep the car in proper working order. Loose belts in a vehicle often make a loud squealing noise.

Your car battery should be checked at least on a monthly basis. Check it for corrosion and have it cleaned out periodically. Batteries also have a certain life span and need to be replaced occasionally. When buying a new battery for your car, go ahead and also check the alternator and distributor to make sure that they continue to work properly.

Once a week, you should check all your car fluids and keep them at their proper levels. This includes the power steering fluid, coolant, windshield washer fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid and other fluids.
